| Maaloula is well known for its Language: which is Aramaic; according to encyclopedia Britannica (15th edition, 1990), Aramaic language was the lingua franca of the near east in the 500 B.C. The Babylonian and Jerusalem talmuds as well as portions of the old tastements book of Daniel and book of Ezra were written in Aramaic. it had its greatest influence in the middle east from 300 B.C. till 650 A.D. Now only 15000 people knows the language among them is the 10000 Christians villagers of Maaloula north of Damascus. |
