The Name:
Maaloula's name changed throughout the history of its existence. the studies suggest that the first name was
Binkrapolis till an important general in the saleucid army entered the village and called it Saleucia. The
name lasted till the Roman took over Syria and entered the village, and change its name to Maaloula, which
means the narrow road. One of the earliest documentation that found in Sinai in the 14th century mentioned
Maaloula, contained detailed describtion of its famous convent and churches. the piece was written on
Tuesday, July fifth of the year 6800 of existence which equal to year 1292 A.D. other names were given to
the village like Avila, Alnashita (by the Arabs) which means the healthy breath.
